When I watched my grandchild fingerpaint, I just wanted to hop in and try it too. I do a lot of detailed nature drawing and every once in awhile, you want something that's a bit more spontaneous.
With children it's called fingerpainting. With adults it's called paste paper. There's a certain amount of freedom, fun, and play in the materials. It's something like drawing in the sand. You don't take yourself too seriously.
