Secret Society

It was a perfect day for taking photos of wildflowers that I've sketched over the years. With such a mild February and March, everything appears to be blooming about two to three weeks ahead of time. 

The formation of this group of Wood Anemones, also referred to as Windflowers, rose like some secret society meeting in the woods. Read the origin of this flower's name and its reputation among cultures,  and it could be the makings of a novel that might rival The Black Tulip. 

Sketching

It's easier to draw family when they're engaged in some form of activity.  They're less conscious of being "the study" and more focused on their own interests.  I find colored pencils keep me from becoming too fiddly with the details, and work more on capturing shapes.

Several years back I came across a book on Elizabeth Peyton.  Her faces are honest and soulful--and her approach to her subjects falls somewhere between a sketch, and what one might consider a "finished" portrait.  I'm intimidated by color;  her use of color is bold and direct.  Maybe, someday,  I'll pick up several bright colored pencils and break out of my comfort zone.
