On the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, I place a rose before our statue of Our Lady of Lourdes. They were not selling roses the night of the vigil, so I opted for a white lily. Four blossoms were on the stalk--three have since opened, one remains tightly shut. It would seem right for it to bloom at the close of Advent.
The scents in the living room are a pleasant combination: the Christmas tree's, a reminder of Christ's promise of everlasting life; the lily's, the Blessed Mother's presence in our lives. How intriguing the way the senses are intertwined with memory.
