"Why doth...





Why toss such a poetically sounding verb as "doth"? Lewis Carroll's poem wouldn't be the same without it. 

It's a perfect word when ruminating about the etherealness of butterflies. "Why doth the little butterfly..." or  "Why does the little butterfly..."  Me thinks the linguists should dust the word off and return it to its rightful place.

There are times I wish I was a poet to praise nature's diversity.  My mind doth not work that way though, so it's a mechanical pencil and camera that have to substitute for words.
