I took an icon writing class in the fall of 2006 and am just now completing the icon. Twice, it had to be scraped because ants chewed away at the hands and face of Christ--unfortunately, ants find the yellow ochre tasty. Discouraged after the second scraping, I put the icon away for awhile. Family encouraged me to finish it, and it's now done--here's hoping that the varnish will make it less appealing to insects.
I vowed I'd never attempt another icon, but there's something that compels me to try again. So I'm off to purchase claybord and will practice egg tempera on that for a while before attempting another icon. Hmmm, maybe Saint Nicolas this time...
